TANF Program Contact Information:-ACF provides states, territories, and tribes with Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) block grants to help low-income families with children achieve economic self-sufficiency.  The federal government does not provide TANF cash assistance directly to the public.

Instead, states, territories, and tribes use their TANF grants to fund monthly cash assistance payments to low-income families with children, as well as a wide range of services that are designed to address one or more of the program’s four broad purposes. Select your state or territory from the list below for local TANF and Tribal TANF help, policies, and other program information. General Benefits links below provide access to centralized benefit portals with information about programs beyond TANF cash assistance.

Information about Tribal TANF programs can be found under the state in which the tribe is located. A list of tribes that administer TANF funds can also be found here: Tribal TANF Programs. (PDF)

what is TANF

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), formerly known as Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC), is a federal program that provides financial assistance to low-income families with children. The program is administered by the states, but it is funded jointly by the federal government and the states.

(FAQs) about Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF):

Q 1. What is TANF?

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), previously known as Aid for Families with Dependent Children (AFDC), is a federal program that provides financial assistance to low-income families with children. The program is administered by the states, but it is funded jointly by the federal government and the states.

Q 2. What are the eligibility requirements for TANF?

  • You must be a resident of a state that participates in TANF.
  • You must be a citizen or eligible immigrant.
  • You must have low income.
  • You must have at least one child under the age of 19.
  • You must meet the work requirements of your state.

Q 3. How much money can I receive from TANF?

The amount of money you can receive from TANF varies depending on your state, family size, and income. In general, TANF benefits are based on a percentage of the federal poverty line.

Q 4. How long can I receive TANF benefits?

The time limit on how long you can receive TANF benefits varies from state to state. However, the lifetime time limit is typically 60 months.

Q 5. Can I get help with medical expenses if I am on TANF?

  • Many states offer Medicaid to TANF recipients.
  • Medicaid is a health insurance program that provides coverage for a variety of medical services, including doctor visits, hospital stays, and prescription drugs.

Q 6. Can I get help with child care if I am on TANF?

  • Many states offer child care assistance to TANF recipients.
  • Child care assistance can help parents pay for the cost of child care so they can work or participate in job training programs.

Q 7. How can I apply for TANF?

To apply for TANF, you must contact your state’s TANF agency. You can find the contact information for your state’s TANF agency online or by calling the National TANF Hotline at 1-866-419-3258.

Q 8. What documents do I need to apply for TANF?

The specific documents you will need to apply for TANF will vary depending on your state. However, some common documents you may need include:

  • Proof of identity (such as a driver’s license or passport)
  • Proof of citizenship or immigration status (if applicable)
  • Proof of income (such as pay stubs or tax returns)
  • Proof of pregnancy or disability (if applicable)
  • Social Security number

Most TANF recipients are required to work or participate in job training programs. The work requirements are designed to help TANF recipients become self-sufficient and get off of welfare.
