Can I apply for the passport card and passport book using the same application?

Yes. You can apply for both a passport book and passport card at the same time. Check the appropriate box at the top of the form to let us know if you would like to apply for one or both documents. 

If you have a passport book andyou are eligible to use Form DS-82, you may apply for a passport card as a renewal by mail even if it is your first passport card.

If you’re renewing both your passport book and passport card, you must submit both documents. If you can submit a passport book, but you lost your passport card, you cannot renew the passport card using Form DS-82.

Why can’t I use a passport card to fly internationally?

The passport card was designed for the specific needs of northern and southern U.S. border communities with residents that cross the border frequently by land. The passport book is the only document approved for international air travel.

When applying for the first time or for your child, you will need to provide evidence of U.S. citizenship and photo identification with your application. Go to our Citizenship Evidence page and Photo ID page for examples of documents we accept.

For example, if you were born in the United States and you do not have your birth certificate, you will need to contact the county, city, or state where you were born and request a certified copy of your birth certificate. 

We also realize that some customers may not have a driver’s license to present as photo ID. We accept other types of government-issued, primary photo ID, and will accept multiple forms of secondary photo ID if you do not have a primary ID.

Avoid the top mistakes on passport applications

We want to make sure you get your application right the first time. Make sure you:

1. Complete all sections of your form including entering your correct Social Security number. Do not leave anything blank. If you’re applying for the first time or with your child under age 16, wait to sign the form until you are instructed to do so. 
2. Closely follow our passport photo requirements.
3. Provide the correct evidence of U.S. citizenship.

Steps to Apply

1. Fill Out Form DS-11

DS-11: Application for a U.S. Passport

Use our Form Filler tool to fill out your form online and then print it. The Form Filler will save time and reduce errors caused by handwriting. If you are experiencing technical issues with the Form Filler, download a PDF. Do not sign your form until instructed to do so by a passport acceptance agent or employee. 

Please note:

• The Form Filler will create the correct form for you based on the data you enter. Double check the information you entered for your date of birth and previous passport issuance date if you did not get the form you expected to receive.
• You must provide a Social Security number, if you have been issued one..
  • If you do not have a Social Security number, you must sign and date a statement that says, “I declare under penalty of perjury under the laws of the United States of America that the following is true and correct:  I have never been issued a Social Security Number by the Social Security Administration.”
• You can apply for a passport book, a passport card, or both documents using Form DS-11.
• You may request a larger passport book, at no additional cost, by checking the ‘large book’ box at the top of the DS-11.

2. Provide Evidence of U.S. Citizenship

Your evidence must be an original or certified, physical copy. A certified copy is any document that has the seal or stamp of the official issuing authority. You must submit one of the following documents:

• Full validity, undamaged U.S. passport (expired passports are accepted). Full validity means the document is/was valid for 10 years for adults and 5 years for children under 16.
• U.S. birth certificate that meets the following requirements:
  • Issued by the city, county, or state of birth
  • Lists your full name, date of birth, and place of birth
  • Lists your parent(s)’ full names
  • Has the date filed with registrar’s office (must be within one year of birth)
  • Has the registrar’s signature
  • Has the seal or stamp from the city, county, or state which issued it
• Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth
• Certificate of Naturalization 
• Certificate of Citizenship

Paper only: You cannot submit digital evidence of U.S. citizenship such as a mobile or electronic birth certificate. You must submit physical evidence of U.S. citizenship and a photocopy of the document. 

Returning your document: You will need to provide your evidence of U.S. citizenship to the acceptance agent or passport employee. We will return your document in a separate mailing up to 8 weeks after you receive the new passport.An image of sample features of a U.S. birth certificate

3. Bring a Photocopy of U.S. Citizenship Evidence

In addition to the original or certified copy of your U.S. citizenship, you must submit a photocopy of the document.

Photocopies must be:

• Legible
• On white 8.5” by 11” standard paper
• Black and white
• Single sided

If you don’t want to submit a photocopy of your citizenship evidence, you may submit a second certified copy of your citizenship evidence, which we will keep. If you don’t submit a photocopy or a second certified copy of your citizenship evidence, your passport processing could be delayed.

4. Present ID

You must present one of the following identification documents (IDs) to the acceptance agent. The ID must readily identify you.

• Valid or expired, undamaged U.S. passport book or passport card 
• In-state, fully valid driver’s license or enhanced driver’s license with photo
• Certificate of Naturalization 
• Certificate of Citizenship 
• Government employee ID (city, county, state, or federal)
• U.S. military or military dependent ID
• Current (valid) foreign passport
• Matricula Consular (Mexican Consular ID) – commonly used by a parent of a U.S. citizen child applicant
• U.S. Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) – commonly used by a parent of a U.S. citizen child applicant
• Trusted Traveler IDs (including valid Global Entry, FAST, SENTRI, and NEXUS cards)
• Enhanced Tribal Cards and Native American tribal photo IDs
• Note: you may be asked to present an additional ID when presenting one of these three documents: 1) In-state, fully-valid learner’s permit with photo, 2) In-state, fully-valid non-driver ID with photo, or 3) temporary driver’s license with photo.

Please note:

• Some states now issue digital ID documents (also known as mobile driver’s licenses or mobile IDs). We cannot accept these digital IDs when you apply for your U.S. passport. You must continue to submit your physical, photo ID and a photocopy of the ID.  
• If you present an out-of-state ID, you must present an additional ID.
• If you are changing the gender marker in your U.S. passport, please see our Selecting your Gender page.

5. Bring a Photocopy of ID

Submit a photocopy of the front (and back, if there is printed information) of each ID that you present when you apply.

Photocopies must be:

• Legible
• On white 8.5”x11” standard paper
• Black and white
• Single sided

6. Determine any Special Circumstances

If any of the below categories apply to you, you may have additional requirements for your passport application. Please see the relevant page for more information.

• Children under 16
• Children 16-17
• Previous passport was lost or stolen
• Owe >$2500 in child support
• Selecting your gender marker 
• Official, diplomatic, or other special issuance passport (only accessible from a U.S. government device)

7. Provide a Photo

You must provide one photo with your application. To avoid processing delays, be sure your photo meets all photo requirements.

• Do not attach or staple your photo to the form. The acceptance agent or passport employee accepting your form will review the photo and staple it. 
• Some passport acceptance facilities provide photo services for an additional fee.  

8. Calculate Fees

You must pay fees for passport services. When applying using Form DS-11, you will pay two separate fees – an application fee and an execution (acceptance) fee.

Adult Applicants (Age 16 and older):

9. Find Location to Apply and Submit your Completed Application

Inside the United States:

• You must submit your completed application, supporting documents, photo, and fees, in person at a passport acceptance facility. Check with the facility to see if you need to make an appointment.
• You may be eligible to make an appointment to apply in person at a passport agency if you are traveling soon. Please see Get My Passport Fast for more information. 

Outside the United States:

Contact your U.S. embassy or consulate.

10. Track your Application Status

You can subscribe to email updates about your application status, and learn more about each status update.

Note: It may take 2 weeks from the day you apply until your application status is “In Process.” During these 2 weeks, your application is delivered to a mail facility, your payment is processed, and your application is scanned and sent to us. If your passport status update says “Not Available,” your application and supporting documents are safely on their way to us.

What is a US Passport Card?

We began issuing U.S. passport cards in 2008 to meet the needs of the U.S. citizens who travel from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and Caribbean countries by land or sea. The passport card cannot be used for international air travel and is a cheaper alternative to the passport book. Report a lost or stolen passport. Where to report the loss of my US passport 2023

Report your valid U.S. passport lost or stolen immediately to protect yourself from identity theft. Do not report your most recent passport as lost or stolen if the passport has expired. When you report your passport lost or stolen, we will immediately cancel it.

You cannot use it for international travel even if you find it later. Reporting your passport lost or stolen does not automatically replace your passport. If you want a new passport after reporting your current passport lost or stolen, apply in person and submit Form DS-11.

How to Replace a Lost or Stolen Passport

To replace a lost or stolen passport, you must submit Form DS-11 in person. Where you apply depends if you are in the United States or outside the country.

• If you are in the United States and traveling in more than nine weeks, make an appointment (if required) to apply at a passport acceptance facility to replace your passport. If you are traveling in less than nine weeks, you may be eligible to make an appointment to apply in person at a passport agency or center to replace your passport.
• If you are outside the United States, contact your nearest U.S. embassy or consulate to replace your passport.

If your photo looks bad because of a printing error on our part, you can use Form DS-5504 to reapply at no cost to you. If your photo is printed correctly and you just dislike your photo, you may use Form DS-82 (if eligible) to reapply. You must pay the normal fees.

If you applied in person or renewed by mail, subscribe to email updates about your passport application status. Status updates may not be available in the first 2 weeks after you submit your application. During these 2 weeks before your application arrives at a passport agency or center, your application is securely sent to a mailing facility and an intake facility where your payment is processed.

You will need the following information to check your status.

• Last Name
• Include suffixes (ex. Jones III, Patton Jr, etc.)
• If you have a hyphen in your name, enter it with and without the hyphen if you cannot find a status update on the first try. (ex. Jackson-Smith, Jackson Smith, or JacksonSmith)

Apply Outside the United States 2023

Applying for a U.S. passport outside the United States is different than applying inside the United States. Each U.S. embassy and consulate has different procedures for submitting and processing your final documents.

In most countries, you must apply in person at a U.S. embassy or consulate for all passport services. In a limited number of countries, you may be eligible to access some services by mail. Check the U.S. embassy or consulate webpage for more information. 

Tips for Applying from Canada

• If you are eligible to renew your passport and need routine or expedited service, skip the trip to a U.S. embassy or consulate in Canada and mail your Form DS-82 to the United States.
• If you are renewing from Canada and paying your fees on pay.gov, mail your application to the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa or a U.S. consulate. Do not mail your application to the addresses in the United States on Form DS-82 if you paid fees on pay.gov. 
• Use Canada Post as your delivery service when sending Form DS-82 to the United States. Do not use other delivery services. 
• We will return your completed passport by USPS First Class Mail and cannot return it via 1-2 day or express delivery.  
• Do not include your Canadian Social Insurance Number on your form in place of your U.S. Social Security Number.
• When renewing by mail, you must pay by check or money order in U.S. funds drawn from a U.S. banking institution.
• All first-time applicants and children under 16 must apply in person at a U.S. embassy or consulate in Canada.

Us passport Selecting your Gender Marker

You can select the gender marker you would like printed on your U.S. passport. The gender you select does not need to match the gender on your supporting documentation such as a birth certificate, previous passport, or state ID. We no longer require medical documentation to change the gender marker on your U.S. passport.

You can select male (M), female (F), or unspecified or another gender identity (X) as your gender marker if you are applying for a U.S. passport book or passport card. You can apply in person or renew by mail for routine or expedited service. 

Beginning in late 2023, you will be able to select X as a marker if you are applying for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad.

Crossing the U.S. – Mexico Border by Land

If you are a U.S. citizen crossing into the United States from Mexico by land without a U.S. passport, you may be slowing down the lines and increasing your wait time.

Adults and children with U.S. passport cards can save time at the border by using designated Ready Lanes that read the passport card’s Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology.

How to use Ready Lanes with a U.S. passport card: 

• Navigate to a lane that has the Ready Lane logo,
• Keep your passport card in hand,
• Display the passport card to the RFID card readers, and
• Proceed to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer.

Applying for a Passport Card in the United States or Mexico

U.S. citizens living along the U.S.- Mexico border can apply for their U.S. passport in the United States or Mexico. U.S. citizens living in Mexico can apply for their passport at the nearest U.S. consulate. U.S. citizens living in the United States can apply at one of more than 7,000 locations which include post offices, libraries, and clerks of court.

Driving to Mexico

Temporary import permits for cars registered in the United States are needed in order to drive beyond the border zones in Mexico.   Permits are enforced when driving approximately 20 kilometers into Mexico.  Permits are NOT needed in the Baja Peninsula.

Banjercito is the government authority that issues vehicle permits.  The process can be done online, at the Mexican border, or at certain Mexican consulates in the United States. The process involves leaving a monetary deposit that will be returned upon the cancellation of vehicle permit when leaving Mexico.

• U.S. citizens must present a valid U.S. passport book or card, in addition to an entry permit (Forma Migratoria Multiple or FMM) issued by Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM). 
• Travelers should be sure to enter Mexico with valid proof of automobile registration, even if remaining in the border zone.  Entering Mexico with an expired U.S. vehicle registration may lead to the confiscation of the auto by Mexican authorities.

• Send Form DS-82 and supporting documents using USPS. UPS, FedEx, DHL, and other companies cannot deliver to the PO Box addresses listed on Form DS-82.

How do I apply in person if I cannot renew by mail?

If you are not eligible to renew your passport by mail using Form DS-82, apply in person and submit the following:

• Form DS-11
• Your evidence of U.S. citizenship and photocopy of that evidence
• Your original or certified name change document, such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order (no photocopies or notarized copies)
• Valid ID and photocopy of that ID
• One color passport photo
• Fees, which are different depending on your age

Please note: You do not need to submit proof of the name change if your name has changed due to marriage and you present an ID issued in your new name. You must include the details of the marriage on the second page of Form DS-11.

I am already using a different name but cannot document the change

If you cannot document the change with a court order, divorce decree, or marriage certificate, apply in person and submit the following:

• Form DS-11
• Your evidence of U.S. citizenship
• Valid ID issued in the name you are currently using and photocopy of that ID
• One color passport photo
• Fees, which are different depending on your age

Please note: you may need to submit Form DS-60: Affidavit Regarding a Change of Name when the name you use is significantly different than the name on your evidence of U.S. citizenship, or your new name cannot be documented by a court order or through marriage. This form must be completed by two people who have known you by both names. You must also submit three certified or original public records that show you have used the new name for five years or more

Correct a Data or Printing Error

You can correct your passport if there is a data or printing error. A data error may include an issue with your name, gender, or place of birth. A printing error may include data is missing on the biographical page, discoloration, or crooked printing. We will correct the error at no charge if the passport is still valid.

What is a U.S. Visa? | US Passport Application Online Apply 2023

A citizen of a foreign country who seeks to enter the United States generally must first obtain a U.S. visa, which is placed in the traveler’s passport, a travel document issued by the traveler’s country of citizenship. Certain international travelers may be eligible to travel to the United States without a visa if they meet the requirements for visa-free travel. The Visa section of this website is all about U.S. visas for foreign citizens to travel to the United States.

(Note: U.S. citizens don’t need a U.S. visa for travel, but when planning travel abroad may need a visa issued by the embassy of the country they wish to visit. USA Visa Waiver Program Overview 2023-24

The Visa Waiver Program (VWP) enables most citizens or nationals of participating countries* to travel to the United States for tourism or business for stays of 90 days or less without obtaining a visa. Travelers must have a valid Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) approval prior to travel and meet all requirements explained below. If you prefer to have a visa in your passport, you may still apply for a visitor (B) visa.

• Under the Visa Waiver Program Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015, travelers in the following categories must obtain a visa prior to traveling to the United States as they are no longer eligible to travel under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP):
• Nationals of VWP countries who have traveled to or been present in Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, or Yemen on or after March 1, 2011 (with limited exceptions for travel for diplomatic or military purposes in the service of a VWP country).
• Nationals of VWP countries who have traveled to or been present in Cuba on or after January 12, 2021 (with limited exceptions for travel for diplomatic or military purposes in the service of a VWP country).
• Nationals of VWP countries who are also nationals of Cuba, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, or Syria.
